Locally, it is better known as Unguja. While internationally, Zanzibar is the more popular name of the archipelago.

It extends as long as 60 miles and stretches around 20 miles, filling up an estimate of 650 square miles. Zanzibar is noted for its attractive sandy beaches where coral reefs lie closely to the shore and also because of Stone Town, a heritage site, which is said to be the sole active town within East Africa.

Majority of the people of Zanzibar are engaged in fishing and agriculture. The reason why Zanzibar is called The Spice Land is that it was once the largest producer of cloves. Ninety seven percent of the population of Zanzibar applies the Islamic faith while the rest practices Hindu. Christianity also influences a number of the inhabitants.
